About Me

Hi! My name is Lyla, I am a social worker & the founder of Roots.

I am also a daughter, a wife and a mother. All these identities have shaped and changed me in a multitude of ways, each one taking on a new meaning as each new identity was added.

Like most women, becoming a mother changed me forever. It both broke me and made me. It brought out a vulnerability in me that I had never been brave enough to explore and embrace. It forced me to delve into my past experiences and gave me the opportunity to heal.

I had been working with children and families for nearly a decade when I became a mother. Becoming a mother meant that my work shifted as I now had a lived experience of the intensity of parenthood. My passion for children to feel loved, safe and accepted for who they are remained, but I now had an added passion for the unique experience of parents and caregivers. The need to nurture parents and caregivers so that they are better able to nurture children felt important and necessary.

Through my services at Roots I hope to bring parents and caregivers together in a real and honest way - to provide spaces where the adults can feel held, safe and heard so that they can be a safe place for their children to land. Roots is a space where parents and caregivers can share their struggles and know we all struggle. Central to my work is honoring each parent and caregiver's innate want to love and connect with the children in their lives.

My work is evidence-based, real life and best practice. My approach is trauma informed, relationship based and grounded in neuroscience. I am very interested in the ways in which trauma is passed down through the generations and how parenthood can be an opportunity for generational healing.

I trained as a social worker in Sydney, Australia and have worked in child protection, criminal justice and education settings, both in Australia and Southern Africa. In addition to my social work training, I have also completed training with Circle of Security International and neuroscientists, Dr Greer Kirshenbaum and Dr Rocio Zunini (Nurture Neuroscience). I am currently in the process of completing training as a the Baby-Led Sleep™ and Well-Being Specialist with Isla-Grace.
